Sculpture Of The Year 2004/2005


Due to popular demand the SIA Apprentice of the Year 2004, Sculpture awards and industry dinner venue was Parliament House NSW. The judging of the sculpture awards was held on 1st April 2005 and the Apprentice of the year presentation the following Friday.

Seven sculpture finalists with their family and teachers, were invited to attend the final judging in the Fountain Court Parliament House followed by refreshments in the Speakers Garden, kindly hosted by The Hon. John Price MP, Deputy Speaker for the Legislative Assembly NSW. Guest speaker, the Hon. Carmel Tebbutt, MLC Minister for Education and Training opened proceedings and complemented finalists on the quality of their work. Ministers Ms Katrina Ann Hodgkinson, MP, Ms Lee Rhiannon, MLC and Ms Christine Robertson, MLC also paid tribute to their craftsmanship. The work of the finalists was exhibited in Parliament House for two weeks and then at the Downing Centre.

The Patron was Dr. Bob Every, Managing Director of Onesteel and the judges, Ron Robertson-Swann AOM, sculptor and painter, John MacDonald, art critic Sydney Morning Herald and Mark Goodsell, NSW Director Australian Industry Group.

Mulwaree High School year 7 student Martin Friend was awarded first prize, donated by Onesteel, for his sculpture ‘Guitar Player’. Recipient of the Sofitel Highly Commended award was Rachel Craig from Gosford High School, for her works ‘Predator bird, Duck, Turtle and Anteater’. The SIA Sub Committee also acknowledged the effort from Doonside Technology High School students. The award winners and their respective school were announced and presented with their awards at the Apprentice of the year function.
